Providing Shelter For Returning Sudanese
Shelter For Life has received funding from the Stewardship Foundation and other various donors to continue its work in Torit, South Sudan with the returning IDPs and refugees.
In 2008, SFL worked with the community of Torit to develop sustainable livelihoods by providing basic tools, seeds and oxen to restore the agricultural capacity of the land. Before the start of the program 97% of the community was threatened by starvation. By the end of the program starvation levels decreased to 75% and 125 families are now able to provide food for their families.
In mid September, SFL began work on rebuilding the houses in Torit. Many of the huts in which people live are slowly destroyed by termites. We believe that shelter is the linchpin of a stable society in that it restores hope, dignity and a sense of community belonging. SFL will partner with community members in the reconstruction of shelters that will protect families from environmental elements and provide a healthy living space for families to begin again.
