After two decades of civil war in Sudan, a window of opportunity has opened for us to serve in the devastated country, following the peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement.

Consequences of the Sudan conflict include the loss of 2 million lives through genocide, as well as the displacement of 6 million people forced to flee from their homes amidst savage violence. For those who have survived the atrocities, poverty plagues their lives. Ninety percent of the population earns less than one dollar a day. Many children under the age of 5 succumb to malaria, dysentery and malnutrition, fighting against the grim odds of a life expectancy of 42 years of age.

Kaltum's Story

"I've been here for 41 days now and I don't have shelter," Kaltum recounts. "The rain is falling on us. At night, we're attacked by mosquitoes, and during the day there is no shade to hide us from the sun."

In the midst of raids between government and militia forces, 32-year-old Kaltum fled for safety with her five children, bringing with her only a small amount of food and a cooking pot. During the escape she was separated from her husband, and has not seen him since. Things worsened upon arrival at the refugee camp when one of her children died from a respiratory infection.

Kaltum is one of many people in Sudan whose life can be changed by your generosity. We thank you for joining us in serving those in need.
