Shelter For Life International has had long involvement in food security programs throughout Central Asia. Since 2000, SFL has provided emergency food relief and Food-For-Work opportunities for thousands of families in Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
Tajikistan
- Over 200 families were provided with Food-For-Work from WFP while SFL helped families rebuild their homes after an earthquake and landslide in Southern Tajikistan in 2000 and 2001.
- Fifty families received Food-For-Work from WFP during the construction of their homes in Qabodian, Southern Tajikistan in 2002.
- Fifty families in Khorog, Tajikistan (Southeastern) received Food-For Work from WFP during the construction of their homes following a 2002 earthquake.
- As part of our 2004 Community Development Initiative for reintegrating returning Tajik male refugees from Pakistan, SFL partnered with WFP to provide Food-For-Work for 120 construction workers building 25 houses in Khatlon District for the refugees.
- Landslides in 2004 forced the relocation of 30 families in Southern Tajikistan. WFP provided Food-For-Work for 150 workers in the construction of these 30 new houses.
- Following serious landslides in southern and central Tajikistan in 2005, WFP provided Food-For-Work for 200 families reconstructing their homes.
Afghanistan
- Severe drought in Badakhshan Province (Far Northeastern Afghanistan) led to a dangerous famine situation in 2000 and 2001. SFL coordinated emergency food distribution in Faizabad, Rustaq, and Shar-e-bezurg to nearly 1,000 families.
- From 2001 to 2003, SFL partnered with WFP for a Food-For-Work program in Badakhshan Province, providing food to workers involved in various water and irrigation programs. Over a 1,000 workers benefited from this program.
- A serious famine affected children in the Wakhan Corridor of Northeastern Afghanistan. Through the donation of a private donor, an emergency food distribution was conducted in the winters of 2004 and 2005, providing food to over 2,200 children in 24 remote villages.
