The anticipation of opening gifts on Christmas morning has long been a joy experienced by children around the world. For some however, this tradition is a completely new and foreign experience. In Afghanistan this week, Shelter For Life International (SFL) was able to bring boxes of gifts bright and early for the school children of Takhar province, by partnering with Operation Christmas Child and the Department of Education to distribute 673 gift boxes to local children. Many of the children who received boxes have been internally displaced from their communities due to conflict, making it hard to attend and remain in school. However, these boxes provide more than just joyous gifts. As one of the local school headmaster highlighted, “This kind of gift motivates children to come to school, and also motivates parents to enroll their children in school”.

After the boxes were distributed, school teachers and children expressed their deepest thanks to both the American children and SFL for sharing these gifts with them. While there may have been no snow in sight, the Christmas spirit was certainly alive and well.
